What is podiatry?
The profession of podiatry has developed from it’s origins in chiropody to become a medical speciality dealing with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the lower limb. (Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists 2002).
Who are podiatrists?
Podiatrists specialise in foot related medical problems affecting peoples´ ability to walk or that are linked to skin and tissue conditions such as infections or ulcers.
Social issues can also affect a person’s foot health and a podiatrist can offer advice on how to improve a problem. Simple nail and skin care is encouraged to be undertaken by the patients themselves and/or their carers.
Referrals for simple nail care are not accepted. However, in certain cases education can be given to help a person with their foot care.
