Equality and diversity
We have been consulting on a Single Equality Scheme this year but we want to go further to develop wider engagement on equality with our local population.
The Equality Act 2010 is due to come into force from October and the new public sector equality duty is expected to be implemented from April 2011.
Therefore, we have paused any further work on a Single Equality Scheme and have updated the action plans from our Race, Gender and Disability Schemes into a Single Equality Action Plan, with due attention to all the other protected characteristics.
We will review progress by April 2011 and will work with you and with our partners to implement the new public duty. We welcome your views and ideas on improving equality in health and well being during this period.
NHS organisations need to know who their staff and patients are and understand their needs, to improve staff experiences and patient services.
The NHS Equality Delivery System
Throughout 2011/12 the NHS Employers organisation is helping to develop and roll out the Department of Health's Equality Delivery System (EDS).
About the Equality Delivery System
The EDS is designed to help NHS organisations improve equality performance, embed equality into mainstream NHS business and is one of the key products to come out of the Equality and Diversity Council (EDC).
More information about the Equality Delivery System can be found on the Department of Health website.
